It gives me real pleasure to introduce the shortlist for the 2008 Whitehall & Westminster World Civil Service Awards. This is the third year that the awards have been held and I have been incredibly impressed with the number and diversity of nominations and the quality of the entries. This proves that the awards are now firmly established as our annual showcase for innovation and improvement.

We received over 700 entries to the awards this year and choosing a shortlist of just three nominations for each of the 13 categories hasn’t been an easy task for our panel of experts. This special supplement tells you how they made their choices. It is a real testament to the Civil Service that we have so many outstanding people and teams, and these awards are our opportunity to recognise their achievements and to say thank you.

The overall winners will be announced at the 2008 Civil Service Awards ceremony on 26 November at Lancaster House in London. Being shortlisted is a real achievement and I want to pass on my congratulations to everyone who got through and to thank everyone who entered– their successes and achievements are an inspiration and set standards of excellence for us all.

Sir Gus O’Donnell KCB
Secretary to the Cabinet and Head of the Home Civil Service
